Bundesdruckerei has taken note: mobile payments will be one of the mega trends in years to come. At this year’s CeBIT, therefore, the German state-owned secure ID provider has joined forces with XCOM AG and biw Bank für Investments und Wertpapiere AG to show how identity services based on the German ID card can facilitate fast identification and help make bank transactions more secure. biw and XCOM are already offering their own mobile payment system: kesh. This system, which enables simple, secure and fast payments using a smartphone, has now been supplemented by secure and reliable identity confirmation using the German ID card and the online ID function. The new system will be on show for the first time at CeBIT from 10 to 14 March 2014 in Hanover, Germany.
XCOM AG has developed for biw Bank für Investments und Wertpapiere AG a law-compliant form of identification that takes just a few minutes. This system uses the accredited VISOCORE® Verify device from Bundesdruckerei. In order to legitimise customers for the innovative mobile payment system “kesh” according to the requirements of Germany’s Money Laundering Act and the Tax Code, the bank clerk places the customer’s ID document on the reading device. The data is then read, automatically copied to the account opening form and the authenticity of the ID document is also confirmed.
“Our solution makes work so much easier for staff at banks. The VISOCORE® Verify system from Bundesdruckerei helps bank staff to quickly check the authenticity of the documents presented and clearly speeds up the process of opening an account,” says Dirk Franzmeyer, Board Spokesperson of biw AG.
Fast security for mobile payments with the German ID card
The companies will also show how Bundesdruckerei’s eID service can be used to secure mobile payments. This means that a bank customer can, for instance, provide their bank with a new mobile phone number, which is to be used for the smsTAN procedure, and confirm this number. eMandates for SEPA payments can also be secured in this way. Premium kesh customers use the service when they pay large sums using a smartphone. In this case, the German ID card with the online ID function activated is linked in the kesh app with the customer account. If requested, the ID card PIN is needed before a transaction is triggered.
“Linking the ID card to the biw mobile payment app ensures that the account holder is the only person who can make payments. That is probably the most secure form of mobile payment in Germany. The application is further proof of the huge potential which the German ID card has to offer,” adds Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei.
The handy mobile cyberJack wave reader from Reiner SCT, a producer of smartcard readers, is used to read ID cards. At the “2nd REINER SCT banking day” on CeBIT Wednesday, Bundesdruckerei employee Frank Morgner will speak on transaction security with the new German ID card and the online ID function.

CeBIT visitors will be able to test the new bank scenarios at Bundesdruckerei’s booth C18 in Hall 7, in the Public Sector Parc. Using their own real ID card, they can open a biw “premium kesh account” in just a matter of minutes in order to use mobile payment functions and can then see for themselves how a transaction is secured using the online ID function.
