Very soon German bank customers will no longer need their bank cards to get their hands on cash. All they will need is the new German ID card with the online ID function activated and the six-digit ID-card PIN.
The highlight of last year’s CeBIT, a demo application showing how to withdraw cash using the new German ID card, is now to become a real possibility for all German bank customers in Hanover from 5 to 9 March 2013.
At this year’s CeBIT, Bundesdruckerei GmbH, along with IT service provider XCOM AG and biw Bank für Investments und Wertpapiere AG, presents a cash machine with an online ID interface.
This innovative service will be available to customers of all German banks who visit Bundesdruckerei’s booth (C18) in hall 7 of the Public Sector Parc. Holders of the new German ID card with the online ID function activated and the six-digit ID-card PIN will be able to withdraw cash from the biw AG cash machine free of charge. It is not necessary to have an account with biw AG.
“By allowing holders to withdraw cash from their accounts, the new German ID card has become a secure and practical means of legitimisation for banking processes and is certain to achieve even more widespread acceptance,” explains Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei GmbH. After CeBIT, the cash machine on show in Hanover will continue to be used: “We are pleased to report that the biw AG cash machine will be set up in the foyer of Bundesdruckerei in Berlin for both our staff and visitors to use,” says Mr Hamann.
Realtime operation planned for Berlin
However, Berlin is just the beginning. “This year we are setting up new cash machines with an online ID interface at other locations and will gradually expand the number of machines in operation,” announced Dirk Franzmeyer, Chairman of the Board of biw Bank für Investments und Wertpapiere AG. At last year’s CeBIT, this Willich-based bank, which belongs to the XCOM AG group, had already offered visitors the possibility to open an account online using the new German ID card.
First-time users of the cash service have to register once at the biw cash machine using their electronic ID card and then enter their account data along with their six-digit ID-card PIN. During the registration process, direct debit authorisation is granted, allowing biw AG to directly debit the amount withdrawn to the user’s bank account. The limit for withdrawals is currently set at 200 euro per day and 1,000 euro per week. The ID-card PIN must be entered each time money is withdrawn.
