Identive Group announced that it has shipped an additional 122,000 SCR3310v2.0 smart card readers to support Spain’s national electronic ID card program. The smart card readers will be used to promote the use of the DNI electrónico, or electronic ID card, which the Spanish government launched in late 2009. More than half of Spain’s 46 million citizens now carry the eID cards.

By providing card readers free of charge, the Spanish government aims to encourage individuals and businesses to use the secure DNI electrónico to access eGovernment, eBanking and eAdministration applications, as well as to digitally sign documents. Several Spanish commercial sponsors also are supporting the project with special services and promotions that leverage the security and convenience of the eID card.

We are very pleased that our SCR3310v2.0 readers are being utilized to provide support for the Spanish government’s eID program and to help both citizen and the government to experience the full benefits of this national ID scheme. Our long experience with large-scale government projects together with our flexibility in meeting customer requirements makes us a preferred partner for such projects,” said Dr. Manfred Mueller, executive vice president of Identive Group and managing director of the Company’s ID Infrastructure division. “The DNI electrónico project offers substantial advantages to citizens as well as businesses: online forms for government services can be filed and processed faster, and eBanking applications can be conveniently executed.
Identive received this most recent order for eID readers from red.es, an entity within the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, through its distribution partner in Spain, Algoritmos Procesos y Diseños (APD).
