NIST confirms Cognitec’s leadership in age assurance and biometric identity technologies.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has ranked Cognitec’s age estimation algorithm best overall in its FATE: Age Estimation and Verification evaluation, the most authoritative benchmark for biometric performance worldwide.
The study assessed algorithms across genders and six global regions, with Cognitec achieving the best average ranking in both accuracy and reliability. Based on Mean Absolute Error (MAE) rates—a central performance metric in biometric testing—Cognitec also secured the top position worldwide.
Building Trust in Identity Systems
Accurate age estimation is now a regulatory priority, as governments and industry sectors introduce age assurance requirements for online services, e-commerce, and access to restricted content. Reliable technology ensures compliance while protecting vulnerable groups and upholding digital trust.

Beyond the digital sphere, immigration and border agencies increasingly require biometric age assessment tools to support identity verification in cases where no official documents exist. Cognitec’s proven accuracy across demographics makes its technology particularly valuable for these sensitive applications.
A Proven Leader in Biometrics
NIST’s retrospective testing highlights the pace of innovation. Cognitec’s current algorithm shows the largest improvement in error reduction compared to 2014 results—surpassing even its own previous top-ranked submission from 2013.
As the only company worldwide exclusively dedicated to face recognition since its founding in 2002, Cognitec continues to be a trusted partner for governments and enterprises seeking secure, fair, and reliable biometric solutions.
